A Bulgarian man was arrested after being ‘aggressive’ and hurling racial abuse towards Asian store worker, Mr Khan, in Hounslow, West London.
On February 9th 2016, around 11.40am, Patryk Piotrowski, 32, returned to the store, where he was a regular customer, to return a Play Station 3 he had claimed was faulty for a full cash refund. However, Mr Khan had told him a full cash refund was not available. After contacting the head office, Mr Piotrowski was told he could get store credit instead.
To which Mr Piotrowski became ‘aggressive’ saying Mr Khan was ‘making up his own rules’ and was racially abusive, calling him a ‘p*ki p*ssy’
This action ‘alarmed distress’ within Mr Khan and the store and the police were called to the premises and arrested Mr Piotrowski.
During his interview Mr Piotrowski said,
“I was angry, I don’t know why. When the police told me I didn’t know it was an assault. [It was] not my intention to cause offence”
He went on to say,
“If I could speak to him [Mr Khan] again, I would say sorry. I’ve learned from this stupid mistake.”
Mr Piotrowski’s case took place on February 26th 2016 at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to the offense.
The defendant, with no previous conviction, was said to be ‘out of character’ and is on medication for depression. He also has blood clots on both legs which may need to undergo many operations, and is also on benefits and lives with his father.
It was concluded that the incident was ‘racially aggravated’ and under Section 5. The verdict was attenuated by Mr Piotrowski’s mental health and early guilty plea and he was fined of a total of £175, of which £25 was to be paid on the day. After negotiation, it was settled the remaining total will be deducted from his fortnightly benefits.
